Piano moving in Memphis: the right equipment and a careful crew

A piano is deceptively hard to move. It is heavy — a spinet is a few hundred pounds, a full upright can reach 800 or more, and a grand can top 1,000 — but the real problem is how that weight is carried: high and off-center on an upright, spread across a long, curved rim on a grand. Handled wrong, a piano damages its own finish and soundboard, gouges floors and door frames, and puts a crew at real risk. Handled right, it is a controlled, unremarkable move. The difference is equipment and experience, not muscle.

We move every kind: spinets, consoles, and studio uprights; baby grands and grands — to a new home, or across the same property when you are rearranging a room or changing floors. An upright is padded and wrapped, lifted onto a four-wheel piano dolly, strapped securely, and moved under full control — upright the whole way. When a grand is tipped vertically and moved on its side, the legs and pedal lyre come off, the case is padded and moved on a padded skid board, then reassembled and set where you want it. That disassembly is not automatic on every grand move; it depends on the path and how the instrument has to travel. Stairs, tight turns, and narrow doorways are the parts most people worry about, and they are exactly what the crew and a planned path are for. Plan to have the piano tuned a few weeks after a move, once it has settled into the new room's temperature and humidity — that is normal for the instrument, not a Titan tuning service, and not a sign anything went wrong.

What type of piano do you have?

Pianos vary enormously — from a small spinet to a nine-foot concert grand — and the type is the biggest factor in how it moves. Find yours below to see roughly what to expect.

Piano type Typical size Approx. weight Crew usually needed
Spinet piano Spinet 36–39 in. tall 200–400 lb Usually 2 movers
Console piano Console 40–43 in. tall 350–450 lb Usually 2 movers
Studio piano Studio 44–48 in. tall 400–600 lb Usually 2–3 movers
Upright (full) piano Upright (full) 49–60 in. tall 500–900 lb Usually 3–4 movers
Baby grand piano Baby grand 5′0″–5′11″ long 500–650 lb Usually 3–4 movers
Grand piano Grand 6′0″–9′0″ long 650–1,300 lb Usually 4–6 movers

Weights and crew sizes are typical planning ranges only — every instrument is a little different, and digital pianos and organs vary the most. Uprights are measured by height and grands by length. Stairs, tight or long carries, difficult truck access, or an unusually heavy instrument can call for additional movers. Tell us your piano and what the access looks like, and we'll confirm the crew.

Why piano size matters

A piano's type and weight drive almost everything about the move. Here's what changes as the instrument gets bigger:

  • Crew size — The extra crew is about weight and control, not size — a spinet takes two movers, a full upright three or four, and a large grand as many as six. The added hands keep a heavy, top-heavy instrument under full control up and down the truck ramp and on stairs, and take the strain off both the crew and the piano.
  • Equipment — Bigger instruments call for the full kit — a four-wheel piano dolly, a padded skid board, and heavy straps — plus the tools to take a grand apart and put it back together.
  • Access & doorways — A grand won't fit through a standard doorway assembled, which is exactly why it comes apart. Uprights usually fit, but the case still has to clear frames, corners, and tight turns.
  • Stairs — Every step adds effort and risk. A flight of stairs can change the crew size and the plan more than the weight alone — and it is the part worth telling us about first.
  • Pricing — All of it feeds the quote: the type of piano, whether a grand needs disassembly, the stairs, and the access on both ends. Bigger and harder to reach means more crew and time.

A closer look at every type

What each piano weighs, how big it is, the crew it usually takes, what makes it tricky, and how we move it.

Titan Elite moving a Spinet piano

Spinet

Weight
200–400 lb
Dimensions
≈36–39 in. tall · ~58 in. wide · ~24 in. deep
Crew
Usually 2 movers

Common challenges

  • The smallest upright — but its whole action is packed into a short case, so it does not take kindly to being bumped, dragged, or set down hard.
  • Light enough that people underestimate it, which is how backs and finishes get hurt. It is still top-heavy and belongs on a dolly, never carried by the keybed.

How Titan moves it

We pad and wrap the case, keys, and pedals, then lift the piano onto a four-wheel piano dolly, strap it securely, and move it under full control by the crew — upright the whole way, never dragged or walked across the floor.

Titan Elite moving a Console piano

Console

Weight
350–450 lb
Dimensions
≈40–43 in. tall · ~58 in. wide · ~25 in. deep
Crew
Usually 2 movers

Common challenges

  • The classic living-room upright — it clears standard doorways, so the move is usually about protecting the home, not squeezing the piano through it.
  • The polished cabinet shows a scuff instantly, so corners, finish, and pedals are padded before it moves an inch, and we protect the floors and door trim on the way out.

How Titan moves it

We pad and wrap the piano, lift it onto a four-wheel piano dolly, strap it securely in place, and move it under full control — so a two-mover crew keeps the weight steady from the room to the truck.

Titan Elite moving a Studio piano

Studio

Weight
400–600 lb
Dimensions
≈44–48 in. tall · ~58 in. wide · ~24 in. deep
Crew
Usually 2–3 movers

Common challenges

  • Noticeably heavier than a console — the piano teachers and serious players own — and that extra weight is why a studio can quietly need a third mover, especially for the truck ramp and stairs.
  • We plan the carry and protect the floors, walls, and trim first; stairs, tight turns, and narrow doorways are where the weight and keeping full control really matter.

How Titan moves it

Padded and wrapped, lifted onto a four-wheel piano dolly, and strapped securely, then moved by a crew sized to the weight and access — two on a straightforward ground-floor move, three when the truck ramp or stairs call for more controlled lifting.

Titan Elite moving a Upright (full) piano

Upright (full)

Weight
500–900 lb
Dimensions
≈49–60 in. tall · ~58 in. wide · ~26 in. deep
Crew
Usually 3–4 movers

Common challenges

  • Uprights do not take up much floor space, but they are surprisingly heavy for their size — and much of that weight sits high inside the cabinet, which makes them top-heavy.
  • The added crew is about weight and control, not size: keeping a heavy, top-heavy piano fully under control across the truck ramp, on stairs, and over uneven transitions, while easing the strain on both the movers and the instrument.

How Titan moves it

We pad and wrap the piano, lift it onto a four-wheel piano dolly, strap it securely, and move it under full control with a crew of three or four. The extra movers are there for the weight — controlling a heavy, top-heavy instrument safely up and down the truck ramp and on stairs, and taking the strain off both the crew and the piano.

Titan Elite moving a Baby grand piano

Baby grand

Weight
500–650 lb
Dimensions
≈5′0″–5′11″ long · ~5 ft wide
Crew
Usually 3–4 movers

Common challenges

  • It will not fit through a doorway assembled, which is why the legs and pedal lyre come off when the piano is tipped vertically — that disassembly is what makes the move controlled, not an upsell, and it is not automatic on every grand job.
  • A grand carries its weight across a long, curved rim, so it is never stood on its own legs in transit; the high-gloss finish marks easily, so it is wrapped and moved on its side.

How Titan moves it

When the piano is tipped vertically and moved on its side, the legs and pedal lyre are removed, the case is carefully padded and wrapped, then moved on a padded skid board. Once inside, the piano is reassembled and positioned where you want it. The crew of three or four is there for the weight, keeping a 600-pound instrument under full control on the truck ramp and stairs.

Titan Elite moving a Grand piano

Grand

Weight
650–1,300 lb
Dimensions
≈6′0″–9′0″ long · ~5 ft wide
Crew
Usually 4–6 movers

Common challenges

  • A full or concert grand can top 1,000 pounds — and that weight, not the length, is why it takes the largest crew. Getting an instrument this heavy safely up and down the truck ramp and through stairs takes real controlled lifting and braking force.
  • The length is what we plan the route around: tight turns, doorways, long carries, elevator fit, and stairs all get mapped before it leaves the room. Legs and lyre come off when the piano is tipped vertically — routine when the path needs it, not automatic on every job.

How Titan moves it

When the piano is tipped vertically and moved on its side, the legs and pedal lyre are removed, the case is carefully padded and wrapped, then moved on a heavy padded skid board. Once inside, the piano is reassembled and positioned where you want it. A crew of four to six controls that weight through the turns, up and down the truck ramp, and on stairs.

What every piano move takes

Whatever type you have, these are the constants of a piano move — the right equipment, the access planned first, the instrument and your home protected, and the after-care.

  • The right piano equipment A four-wheel piano dolly and proper straps on every move, plus a padded skid board when a grand comes apart — the gear that turns a dangerous lift into a controlled one. It is why a piano needs piano movers, not a couple of extra hands.
  • Stairs, doorways, and tight turns The access is the hard part, so we plan it first — measuring doorways, mapping the turns, and moving the piano step by step with the crew and equipment to keep it under control the whole way.
  • Protecting the instrument and your home The finish, keys, and pedals are padded and wrapped, and we handle floors, walls, and door frames carefully as appropriate along the route — pads where they help, without promising every surface is covered end to end.
  • After the move: settling and tuning A piano should be tuned a few weeks after it moves, once it has adjusted to the new room. That is normal — moving and a change in temperature and humidity naturally shift the tuning, on any piano and with any mover.

How to prepare for your piano move

A little prep helps the day go smoothly — but none of it is required. If you are unsure about anything, just leave it to the crew.

  • Clear a path from the piano to the door — rugs, furniture, and clutter moved aside
  • Measure doorways, hallways, and stairwells if you can, and flag any tight spots
  • Remove photos, décor, and anything sitting on top of or inside the piano
  • Gently close and secure the keyboard lid if yours has one — never force it
  • Leave any disassembly of a grand's legs and lyre to us when the move requires it
  • Clear parking as close to the door as possible at both homes
  • Tell us about stairs, steep driveways, gravel, or gates ahead of time
  • Plan to have the piano tuned a few weeks after the move, once it settles

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to move a piano?

It depends mostly on the type of piano and the access. An upright is lighter and simpler than a grand, which has to be partly taken down and reassembled, and stairs or tight doorways add time. Tell us the type of piano and what the access looks like on both ends, and we will give you a clear quote before the move.

Do you move grand pianos?

Yes. When a grand is tipped vertically and moved on its side, the legs and pedal lyre come off, the case is padded and wrapped, and the piano travels on a padded skid board, then is reassembled and set where you want it. That is not automatic on every grand job — it depends on the path. It is more involved than an upright, and it is exactly the kind of move the right equipment is built for.

Can you move a piano up or down stairs?

Yes — that is usually the part people need help with. We plan the path first and use the right dolly, straps, and crew to keep the piano controlled on the stairs, with pads and careful handling for the instrument and the stairwell.

Will my piano need tuning after the move?

Almost certainly, and it is completely normal. Moving a piano and settling it into a room with a different temperature and humidity shifts the tuning. Most piano owners have it tuned a few weeks after the move, once it has adjusted to the new space. Titan does not tune pianos — plan that with your technician.

Do you move uprights and spinets too?

Absolutely — spinets, consoles, and studio uprights are the pianos we move most. Each one is padded and wrapped, lifted onto a four-wheel piano dolly, strapped securely, and moved upright under full control the whole way.

Are you insured to move a piano?

Yes. Titan Elite is fully licensed and insured, so a heavy, high-value instrument is protected from the first lift to its place in the new room.

How much does a piano weigh?

It depends on the type. A small spinet is around 200–400 lb, a console or studio 350–600 lb, a full upright 500–900 lb, a baby grand 500–650 lb, and a full or concert grand anywhere from 650 to over 1,300 lb. The comparison table above breaks it down by type — but the weight is only part of the story; how it is carried, plus the access and stairs, matter just as much.

How many movers does it take to move a piano?

It depends on the type. A spinet or console usually takes two; a studio two or three; a full upright or a baby grand three to four; and a large grand four to six. Stairs, tight doorways, or a long carry can add a mover — we size the crew to the piano and the access, not just the weight.

Can two people move a piano?

A small spinet or console, sometimes — carefully, on the right dolly. But a full upright needs three or four trained movers, and a grand four or more, with proper equipment. Much of a piano's weight rides high and off-center, so they are top-heavy and unforgiving — most injuries and damage come from too few people trying to muscle one. It is the classic case for hiring piano movers.

Do I need to take my piano apart before you arrive?

No. Leave it as it is. When a grand needs to be tipped on its side, we remove the legs and pedal lyre ourselves and reassemble it at the destination. All we ask is that you clear a path and take any loose items off the top and out of the inside.

Can you move a piano to a second floor or a basement?

Yes. Stairs are the part people most often need help with, and it is exactly what the dolly, straps, and a planned path are for. Just let us know about the stairs ahead of time so we bring the right crew size — a flight or two can change the plan more than the weight does.

Do you move digital pianos and organs too?

We do. Digital pianos, keyboards, and organs are lighter than an acoustic piano but still awkward and worth protecting — we pad, wrap, and handle them with the same care.

How far in advance should I book a piano move?

A week or two is ideal, especially for a grand or a move with stairs, so we can schedule the right crew. That said, we handle shorter-notice piano moves when we can — reach out and we will find a date that works.

Can you move a piano within the same home or property?

Yes. Same-property moves — across a room, to another floor, or to a different building on the lot — are a regular piano job, not only full relocations. Tell us the path and the stairs so we bring the right crew and equipment.
