A slate pool table is built in layers, and that is exactly why it cannot just be picked up and carried to a new room. Under the cloth sits the slate — usually three pieces, each 150 to 250 pounds — resting on a frame, with rails and pockets bolted around the edge. Slate is heavy and brittle at the same time: flex it or set it down wrong and it cracks, and a cracked slate is the end of the table. Moving one assembled, even across a room, is how tables get ruined — slate tables almost never move assembled.
So we take it apart the right way: the cloth is carefully released, the rails and pockets come off, and the slate is lifted clear and moved in its pieces, padded and kept flat. At the new location we reverse it — the frame is set and leveled, the slate is placed and shimmed level, the seams are handled, and the cloth and rails go back on. If your cloth is worn, a move is the natural time to replace it, and we are glad to talk that through. A pool table move is really a disassembly, a careful lift, and a precise reassembly — not a carry.
- Slate tables require disassembly Slate tables almost always have to be disassembled to move safely, even across a room. We release the cloth, remove the rails and pockets, and separate the slate from the frame so nothing is stressed or cracked.
- Handling the slate The slate is the heavy, fragile heart of the table — often three pieces at 150 to 250 pounds each. We keep it flat, padded, and supported so it never flexes, because a cracked slate cannot be repaired.
- Reassembly and leveling At the new spot the frame is set and the slate is placed and shimmed level, then the cloth, rails, and pockets go back on. Leveling is part of proper reassembly — not a promise about how the table will play.
- The cloth Your existing cloth is released and reinstalled with care. If it is worn or you have wanted a new color, a move is the natural time to replace it — just let us know and we will talk it through.
- Stairs, doorways, and tight rooms Game rooms are often upstairs or in a basement. Taking the table down to its pieces is also what makes the stairs and doorways manageable, and we plan the path before anything moves.
- Protecting the table and your home The rails, pockets, and finish are padded and kept together, and we handle floors, walls, and door frames carefully as appropriate along the route on both ends of the move.
